SUNY Broome is proud to announce the creation of the College’s first track and field athletic program in our 75 year history. Spearheaded by Interim Director of Athletics, Colleen Cashman, the track and field team will be assembled and coached by Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame member and NJCAA Region III Championship winning coach, Tom Carter.
Assisting Coach Carter is SUNY Broome alum, Steve Esposito. Assistant Coach Esposito ran cross country for SUNY Broome under Tom Carter for two seasons and was a national competitor during that time. His performance as a runner at SUNY Broome enabled Esposito to walk on to a NCAA DII running program at Kutztown University.
Both Carter and Esposito are very active in local and state running communities and are still competing in regional road races. Carter has set over 50 course records in local, state, and regional road races and Esposito is following in his footsteps with over 50 road race wins.
Carter and Esposito are honored to be tasked with the opportunity to build the College’s first team and for the ability to offer our students the option to run throughout the year via cross country and track and field.
With SUNY Broome’s first track and field season fast approaching, Coach Carter is in recruitment mode. “Our season begins on March 1st, so it’s coming up quickly. We are looking for women and men who want to have fun, work hard, and be part of something very special in SUNY Broome’s history,” said Carter.
Students interested in joining the College’s first track and field team need to be full-time students, and are eligible to earn PE credit for participating in the program. Track meets will take place between April 2, 2022 – May 14, 2022. Travel transportation, meals, and uniforms will be provided by SUNY Broome. Athletes of all experience levels are encouraged to join the team.
