SUNY Broome women's basketball team defeated the NJCAA's 14th ranked Northampton CC
The women’s basketball team defeated the NJCAA’s 14th ranked Northampton CC 66-63 on Thursday night in the Baldwin Gymnasium. Just two nights earlier Broome fell just short against a Penn State Wilkes-Barre team, falling 54-52 to the Mountain Lions.

The Hornets jumped out to a 19-14 first quarter lead before allowing the Spartans to fight their way back to within one at the intermission, 33-32. The third quarter saw the Hornets get some breathing room and extend their lead to 51-42 thanks in part to Gwendolyn Payne’s steals and points off the fastbreak. The nine point third quarter lead was short lived as the Spartans came back to within one point late in the contest but were held off by the Hornet’s ability to hit some key shots down the stretch and get a couple of much needed stops.

The balanced effort was led by Michelle Mercado with 18 points, 4 assists, 3 steals and a block. Payne added 15 points, 4 boards and 3 steals while Ava Eichler chipped in with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Sophia Dutra and Ghia Medovich held their own despite being outsized down low, they combined for 15 rebounds and 13 points.

Broome is off until next Thursday when they travel to Corning CC for their first MSAC game, scheduled for a 5:00 pm start.
