SUNY Broome women's basketball team defeated Corning CC

The women’s basketball team defeated Corning CC,64-38, on Thursday evening in Corning in their first MSAC game of the year. The Hornets took an 18-4 first quarter lead and were never really threatened after that despite a 22 point Red Baron third quarter.

Broome hit a season high ten 3-pointers led by Michelle Mercado and Sarah Yakout with three each. The balanced attack was led by Ava Eichler with another double-double, posting 10 boards and 15 points. Mercado filled the stat line with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Gwendolyn Payne and Yakout each put up 9 points with the former having 4 assists and 3 steals. Ghia Medovich came up with 7 points and high school teammate Abby Lyon came off the bench and added 6 points, with both players shooting 2-3 from the field. Lyon picked up 9 rebounds and 3 assists in the contest and Sophia Dutra chipped in with 6 rebounds and 4 points.

The Hornets are off for another week before returning home next Thursday for another MSAC matchup against Onondaga CC at 6:00 pm.
