SUNY Broome Women's Soccer Falls To Jefferson In Season Opener

The women’s soccer team lost a 3-0 decision to Jefferson CC on Saturday.

Saturday’s clash was the first regular season contest for the Hornets, while Jefferson entered the match with a 1-0 record after beating Hudson Valley.

Even competition and strong defensive efforts by both teams left the score tied 0-0 at halftime. The Cannoneers got off five shots in the first half while the Hornets managed two.

Jefferson broke the deadlock early in the second half with a breakaway goal, taking a 1-0 lead. The Cannoneers strengthened their advantage to 2-0 in the 62nd minute with another breakaway goal, converting a long pass up the field into a shot that hit the corner of the net. Jefferson would seal the game and the victory with a penalty kick in the 88th minute.

Zephora Brouillette led the Hornets’ attack with three shots, the first of which hitting the side post. Despite creating multiple opportunities, Broome could not successfully find the net.

Freshman goalkeeper Madeline Hyzer made a strong debut in the net, recording six impressive saves.

Next on the docket is a road match with the Mohawk Valley Hawks on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
