The volleyball team picked up three sweeps at the Corning CC POD on Saturday, winning matches against Tompkins-Cortland CC 3-0, SUNY Adirondack 3-0, and Hudson Valley CC 3-0.
In the first match, the Hornets faced the Panthers from TC3 and won in three sets 25-12, 25-16, 25-12. The Hornets had 34 kills and 11 errors on 70 attempts, hitting for 0.329%. Melissa Carden and Gabriella Bishop had a team high 7 kills apiece, Megan Carden had 6 kills and Casie Kephart, Anna Tiberia and Josephine Dure chipped in with 4 kills each. Broome was red-hot from the service line amassing 19 aces on the match with Bishop tallying a team high 6 and, Tiberia and Dure contributed 4 aces apiece. Tiberia finished with 25 assists and a team high 8 digs. Melissa Carden had 2 solo blocks and Dure had 1.
Match two saw the Hornets take on the Timberwolves from Adirondack and earn their second sweep of the day with set scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-14. The Hornets had 33 kills and 10 errors on 79 attempts, hitting for 0.291%. Melissa Carden hit 0.360% and had a team high 10 kills with Megan Carden and Bishop adding 8 kills apiece. The Hornets continued to dominate from the service line amassing 16 aces on the match with Bishop and Megan Carden tallying a team high 4 aces apiece and, Kephart and Dure chipping in with 3 aces each. Tiberia finished with 26 assists and Brianna Rossi had a team high 14 digs. Melissa Carden added 4 solo blocks and 2 assisted blocks to her totals and Dure had 1 solo block.
In the final match of the day, the Broome faced Hudson Valley CC and controlled sets one and two winning 25-22 and 25-15. In the third set the Hornets found themselves down 0-7 to the Vikings before a timeout was called. Kephart got the team on the scoreboard following the timeout with a kill. The Vikings followed with three unanswered points for a 10-1 lead before a kill by captain Megan Carden added another point for the Hornets followed by a Kephart kill and then an ace to draw within 7 points. The Vikings answered with 3 points of their own and a 16-6 lead. The Hornets came charging back starting with a kill by Bishop, an ace by Tiberia, two errors by Hudson Valley, another kill by Bishop and another error by the Vikings to close the gap to 5 points. A Kephart kill made it a 3 point match in favor of Hudson Valley, 16-13. A kill by Bishop and an Viking error brought Broome to within one before the Vikings went on a 3 point run and a 19-15 advantage. Dure went on an 8-point service run to close out the match with the Hornets displaying their relentless defense which included a “pancake” save by Megan Carden. The comeback ended the way it began, with a kill from Kephart for the 25-20 win.
Broome will travel on Wednesday for a 6:00 pm match in Dryden against Tompkins Cortland CC.
