For over 50 years, SUNY Broome has been dedicated to providing an academically rigorous and applied oral health education to over 2,500 dental hygienists. This year, SUNY Broome’s Dental Hygiene Department was honored with the 2021 New York State Dental Association Foundations of Excellence in Academics Award.
Dr. Kevin Drumm, President of SUNY Broome, accepted the award on behalf of the department. “While I am immensely pleased about our Dental Hygiene program’s top academic standards and highest accreditation status from the American Dental Association Council on Dental Accreditation, I am most proud of the program’s commitment to community service and engagement,” he said.
Each year, SUNY Broome’s Dental Hygiene students, via their work in our on-campus dental clinic, provide approximately 2,200 patients from our area with exceptional and affordable dental care. The students don’t just focus their efforts on caring for our local neighbors, but they are also committed to providing oral healthcare on a global level. In 2014, SUNY Broome established the “Health for Haiti” service learning course. This award-winning program provides humanitarian assistance and health care to children and their families in Haiti. Our students gain hands-on experience as they ensure that the over 200 children seen in our pop-up clinics receive an exam, oral hygiene instructions, dental sealants, and a fluoride varnish. The “Health for Haiti” initiative received the 2016 and 2019 American Dental Hygienists’ Association Community Service Award. SUNY Broome was selected out of 335 dental hygiene programs throughout the United States.
“I firmly believe that Department Chairperson Maureen Hankin and her dedicated team are an excellent example of the incredible work that can be accomplished when a group of faculty, staff, and students are excited by, engaged in, and committed to their field of study,” said President Drumm.
