SUNY Broome Hosts Hornet Academy - Victoria with students

Hospitality Programs Instructor Victoria Tompkins works with students on a culinary demonstration.

It’s never too soon to explore potential career paths, and thanks to SUNY Broome’s Hornet Academy, middle school students can learn about a wide range of options and related Broome programs.

The pilot program began this fall with hand-selected students from the Maine-Endwell and Windsor school districts. About a dozen students came to campus for three hours four Saturdays in a row to spend time with faculty from various disciplines. The first four-week series just wrapped.

Said Danielle Britton, SUNY Broome’s Director of Training, Education and Workforce Development, “Our hope is that we introduce students to careers they didn’t know about, or they learn more about careers they’re already aware of. We’ve also been intentional with our program selection to include all our divisions, a large number of our programs, in-demand careers, and programs that align with career exploration programs in high schools. Hornet Academy experiences can increase academic confidence and potentially influence high school course selection.”

Special thanks to Health Sciences and STEM Divisions Staff Associate Erika Olenik, Workforce Development Senior Staff Assistant Mara Stillman, and the series A faculty presenters, including Erin O’Hara-Leslie, Christina Hasemann, and Stephanie Albitz (health sciences/health information technology), Mike Stamets, Victoria Tompkins, and Maria Montemagno (culinary/hospitality and event management), Courtney O’Hagen and Lenny Grozier (education, human services/social work) and Kennie Leet and Doug Chrzanowski (environmental/civil engineering).

Series B begins on November 4 and will include robotics and food science, physical therapy and radiologic technology, criminal justice and emergency services, and beat production and visual arts.
