The week of November 14 – November 20 has been designated as National Apprenticeship Week (NAW). Currently in its 8th year, National Apprenticeship Week highlights the power of the apprenticeship workforce development model and its ability to provide expedited, hands-on, training through a combination of professional observation and study.
In honor of NAW, SUNY Broome’s Office of Workforce Development & Continuing Education is celebrating their upcoming pre-apprenticeship program, the Opportunity Impact Training Program, which begins on November 7, 2022. The Opportunity Impact Training Program (OITP) is a collaborative effort between Broome Tioga Workforce, SUNY Broome, and area employers. Individuals in search of employment opportunities are invited to attend an intensive four-week training course on the basics of manufacturing for entry-level positions. This course, which is a hybrid of traditional study and experiential learning, concludes with job interviews with area partners who are actively seeking to hire these newly trained manufacturing professionals.
Hosted primarily in the Decker Health Science Center, the pre-apprenticeship program will run daily, from 8:30 am – 5:00 p. Participants will gain exposure to concepts in Measuring Devices, Blueprint Reading, Lean Manufacturing, Root Cause Analysis, Technical Writing, Excel and more.
In 2017, The State University of New York (SUNY) established an official partnership with New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) and U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) to establish apprenticeship opportunities across the state. Since then, academic institutions and community partners have been hosting apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs in intensive, but digestible formats. Apprenticeships in highly in demand fields, such as manufacturing, are a critical component to preparing the workforce to fill an abundance of high-wage positions that are vacant in the Southern Tier Region.
