SUNY Broome traveled to Batavia on Thursday afternoon to take on Genesee CC in a softball doubleheader

Broome traveled to Batavia on Thursday afternoon to take on Genesee CC in a softball doubleheader with scores resembling football games rather than softball games. The Cougars bested the Hornets in the opener 21-19 and the Hornets turned around and got the best of the Cougars in the nightcap, 18-17. The slugfest saw 83 hits including 25 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run.

The first inning of game one was a sign of things to come when, in the top of the first Broome scored 11 runs only to see that lead slip away to Genesee after three innings of play, 13-12. The Hornets went up 15-13 in the top of the fourth and the Cougars answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs and a 16-15 lead. The next inning Broome plated three more runs and an 18-16 lead, answered by Genesee with a run to cut the lead to one, 18-17. The sixth inning began with another Hornet run before the Cougars scored four more runs and shut down the Broome bats in the top of the seventh for the victory. Jacqualine Bigelow came up big at the plate, going 4-6 with 4 RBIs followed by Leah Carlini with three hits in five at bats. Brianna Ramstine had two hits in four attempts, both doubles while Keira Warwick and Marrissa Rogers each had a multi-hit game including one double each. Jenna Gaisford went the distance in the circle but fell short, striking out five and walking seven.

Game two started out evenly with both teams producing runs, twenty five of them through the first three innings and a 13-12 Cougar lead. The game ended in dramatic fashion when Genesee tied the game in the top of the seventh at 17-17 before Brooke Ladd came up in the bottom half of the inning with the bases loaded and promptly hit a fly ball to the outfield scoring the winning run. Ramstine, Bigelow and Warwick each had three hits in the contest followed by Ladd, Carlini, Rogers and Lauren Simmons with two hits each. Ramstine and Rogers posted two doubles while Bigelow, Warwick, Carlini and Simmons had one two-bagger apiece. Warwick made it through the entire game for the win.

The Hornets travel to Sanborn on Saturday for a doubleheader against Niagara County CC scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
