SUNY Broome’s Dr. Bill Altman (Psychology & Human Services Department), in his capacity as the chair of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology’s  Presidential Task Force: Psychology in Communities (STP is Division 2 of the American Psychological Association) chaired the Participant Idea Exchange: Bringing Psychology to Our Communities with STP at the 39th annual National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (NITOP) on Jan. 5 in St. Pete Beach, Fla.

Dr. Altman led participants through ways to determine what information psychological scientists might share with their communities, how teachers of psychology can share their discipline with as many diverse communities as possible and what outlets are available or that psychology teachers might create. He also introduced the group to a wiki designed to help them connect with their communities, and give them the tools to do so.  The wiki is available to anyone at http://psychincommunity.pbworks.com.

In addition, Dr. Altman provided access to an online tool for helping scientists in any field communicate better with local and national media.  This tool is available at http://williamaltman.info/Bill_Projects/Working_with_the_Media/Psychologists_and_the_Media.htm.
