The baseball team visited the Genesee Cougars for a doubleheader on Tuesday, losing both games.

The Hornets were outmatched in an 11-1 defeat in game 1 and lost a close decision in game 2, 8-6.

Game 1 lasted five innings, and Broome was unable to get a run on the board until the top of that fifth inning despite totaling five hits and striking out just three times as a team. Genesee scored four runs in the second inning, two in the fourth, and then five in the bottom of the fifth.

Joseph Miller and Jack Symons both logged a double in the contest for the Hornets and Miller scored a run. Daniel Crowley, Thomas Contrata, and Jacob McTigue had one hit each. Crowley was the starting pitcher in game 1 and allowed just five hits over 4.0 innings while striking out five Cougars. Symons relieved Crowley on the mound.

The visiting Hornets found more offensive life in game 2, and early, getting things started with four runs in the top of the first. Genesee, however, countered with two runs in the first, second, and third innings to take a 6-4 advantage after three. Broome answered with a run in the fifth, but Genesee had a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to go up 7-5. Trailing 8-5 after six, Broome pushed one run across in the top of the seventh but could not complete the comeback in a back-and-forth game.

Kobe Dela Cruz drove the offensive attack by going 2-4 with three RBIs. Crowley impressed at the plate by going 2-3 and scoring two runs. Nicholas Ragonese had an RBI off the bench for the Hornets. Logan Mackey, Kaden Grayson, and Nathan Moses had the other hits for the visitors in game 2. Miller kept Broome in the contest over his 5.0 innings pitched, while McTigue pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief. Also defensively, Trevor Dennison caught two runners stealing out of three attempts behind the dish.

The Hornets’ record now sits at 5-18 on the season. Next up, Broome will welcome the 8-19 Jayhawks of Jamestown CC to Edwin C. Daub Field on Thursday for a 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM doubleheader.
