Working at the Kentucky Derby is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many, and for students from the Hospitality Programs Department at SUNY Broome, it was an invaluable opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world setting. Both Culinary Arts and Event and Sports Entertainment Management students were able to showcase their skills and expertise in an environment known for its high stakes and fast-paced nature.
Throughout the week, these students were immersed in the hustle and bustle of one of the most prestigious events in the world of horse racing. From preparing exquisite dishes to managing the logistics of a major sporting event, they were challenged to adapt and excel in various roles. Despite the long hours, the experience was rich with learning opportunities and hands-on experiences that simply cannot be replicated within the confines of a classroom.
For Culinary Arts students, it was a chance to showcase their culinary ability under pressure, crafting dishes that meet the high standards expected at an event like the Kentucky Derby. Meanwhile, those specializing in Event and Sports Entertainment Management had the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of organizing and executing the Finish Line Suites, gaining invaluable insights into the behind-the-scenes operations of such an iconic occasion.
Overall, the week spent at the Kentucky Derby was not only a test of their skills and knowledge but also an experience that will undoubtedly shape their future careers in the hospitality industry. It provided them with a unique blend of theoretical understanding and practical expertise, setting them apart as professionals ready to tackle the challenges of the industry with confidence and finesse.
