The painting "Dickinson Remembered" by Michael TanzerJoin SUNY Broome and the Broome Community College Foundation for the opening of an exhibit featuring the work of painter, teacher and social activist Michael Tanzer.

The exhibit will run from June 8 through July 25 at the Gallery @ SUNY Broome, located on the first floor of the library. A reception will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. June 8, with a short ceremony at 4:45 p.m.

During the reception, SUNY Broome alumni Conrad and Lorna Steigenwald will donate a large Tanzer painting to the college.

A native of the Bronx, Tanzer studied for a year and a half at the prestigious Frank Reilly School of Art in New York. He worked in a variety of media, from oil painting to ceramics, and explored a variety of subject matter, from classical nudes, street life and tattoos to Franz Kafka and finally Asian themes.

He and his family moved to Binghamton in 1972. Tanzer taught studio painting and Asian art history at SUNY Broome from 1991 until his passing from cancer in 2000.
