The Cazenovia Convention

December 13, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Photo of The Cazenovia Convention is used with the permission of the Madison County Historical Society

Students in Julia O’Connell’s class From Spirituals to Hip Hop: American Music of the African Diaspora are presenting an original reenactment of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Convention, which took place in Cazenovia, New York. The historical convention featured prominent abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass.

O’Connell’s students will re-create this important event and perform abolitionist music, including a forgotten song recently re-discovered in Rochester after more than 150 years, “Frederick Douglass’s Farewell to England.”
