  • What is Convocation Day?
    It is an annual college event provide opportunities for students to experience a communal day of significant extra-curricular learning and enrichment. This year’s Convocation Day features a keynote speaker, Q and A session, faculty-led workshops and a documentary film screening.     The theme of Convocation 2021 is Climate Change and our keynote speaker is Dr. Bruce Monger of Cornell University who will address us at 10 a.m. on the topic of: Climate Change: The Extraordinary Challenge This Generation is Called Upon to Solve.     • Described by the New York Times as “charismatic”, Dr. Monger fills a one thousand seat venue at Cornell University as his course on oceanography has become the most popular on this Ivy League campus
    • Our speaker has lead an adventurous life, whether motorcycling around the country, working as a logger or enjoying a tenure at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He started his academic career at a community college himself, so he knows the importance of launching your own great life adventure and career right here at SUNY Broome Community College

Climate Change: Its growing Impact on the Poor and People of Color
A brief overview of how the impact of climate change poses a greater threat to poor people and people of color than the rest of humanity. Attention to examples from the global, national and local level will be explored as well as the proverbial question, “What is to be done?”

Investing to Curb Climate Change
Can you help move the US (and world) economy towards a lower carbon path? Yes – you can, provided you exercise your vote, voice and powers as an investor. This presentation will provide an overview of Sustainable, Responsible and Impact (SRI) investing in general and will specifically explore impact investing in the area of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 13 – Climate Action. Attendees should come away with a basic understanding of SRI Investing and as it pertains to climate change, a framework for incorporating these ideas into their investments and some actionable ideas to make your investments more climate friendly and sustainable.

What exactly is sustainability? Why is it more important than ever? How can sustainable business practices make the world a better place? Finally, how can you help in our collective journey to a more sustainable planet earth. Film Screening
1:30 pm
Battleground Everglades
This documentary film explores the struggle to save one of the world’s most valued wetlands: Florida’s Everglades. Other threats to Florida’s ecosystem are examined as well. The film may serve as a message of hope as the global community struggles to cope with their own environmental challenges.
