Latino/a Students Design Identity Conscious, Asset-Based & Culturally Relevant Initiatives That Validate, Engage & Support Their Success

According to the 2020 Census, Hispanics made up more than half of the population growth from 2010 to 2021, and yet less enrolled and less persisted to degree completion. To combat that decline, institutions now need to renew their focus on designing identity conscious, asset-based, and culturally relevant initiatives and support programs that promote Latino/a student success and degree completion.

Join us on Thursday, February 23, 2023, as our expert presenters will break down the current national demographic and trend data on enrollment, retention, and persistence to graduation. They will share the emerging evidence-based persistence strategies for Latino/a students and how crucial creating culturally engaging and culturally relevant opportunities validates and proactively engages these students both socially and academically. The presenters will address intersectionality, imposter syndrome and the asset model vs. deficit model of resiliency of your Latino/a students.

Engage your faculty and staff to utilize this data and strategies in and out of the classroom to foster a sense of belonging and holistic support. Recognize both the unique challenges and potential that Latino/a students bring to your institution and provide the necessary support and resources to help them succeed and graduate.

Participation Outcomes

As a result of this online training, you will be able to:

Understand the intersecting identities of Latinx/a/o students, including sexuality, gender, identity, citizenship, ability, and their impact on their college experience – develop asset-based programs to support the multiple facets needed to foster a positive sense of self and validate these diverse students.

Identify emerging evidence-based persistence strategies for Latino/a students to help you assess current needs, identify gaps, and create opportunities to address unique needs – create initiatives that support culturally engaging and relevant opportunities to proactively engage them both socially and academically.

Analyze and assess current demographic and trend data on enrollment, retention, and persistence – engage your faculty and staff to utilize this information and next step strategies to foster a sense of belonging and holistic support both in and out of the classroom.

Utilize the current national data and research related to today’s growing Hispanic/Latino student populations and interpret what that data means for your institution – make decisions, create programs and act to ensure you meet the unique needs of these students and help them overcome potential challenges to persist on campus.

Recognize that there may be cultural context and family expectations that may impact students’ ability to be successful in a virtual learning environment – build a campus-wide support system and identify community resources to ensure your Latinx/a/o students are able to overcome potential barriers to ensure their academic and social success.
