Latino/a Students Data-Based Initiatives to Increase Enrollment, Retention and Support

October 12 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

SUNY Broome Professional development

Transitioning to college and persisting towards degree completion can be stressful enough for Latino/a students under normal circumstances. The pandemic disproportionally affected Latino/a students — less enrolled and less persisted to degree completion. After years of unprecedented Latino/a student enrollment growth, institutions now need to renew their focus on targeted outreach, increased enrollment and retention strategies, and support programs that promote Latino/a student success and degree completion.

Join us on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, as our expert presenters will break down the demographic and trend data on enrollment and COVID’s impact on first-generation and Latino/a students. They will share the emerging evidence-based persistence strategies for Latino/a students and how crucial creating a sense of “familia” is to ensure they engage both socially and academically. The presenters will highlight strategies you can implement right now to help your Latino/a students succeed so you can help them bridge the completion gap and earn a degree.

Take this opportunity to increase Latino/a success by focusing on their assets and reframing support programs to capitalize on those strengths. Engage your faculty and staff to utilize this data and strategies in and out of the classroom to foster a sense of belonging. Develop an environment and support programs that promote Latino/a student success, degree completion and career readiness.

Topics Covered

As a result of this online training, you will be able to:

  • Utilize the current national data and research impacting Latino/a student populations and interpret what that data means — make decisions, create programs and act to ensure you meet the unique needs of these students and help them overcome any potential challenges to persist on campus.
  • Identify emerging evidence-based persistence strategies for Latino/a students to help you assess current needs, identify gaps, and create opportunities to address unique needs — create initiatives that successfully enroll, retain, and graduate Latino/a students.
  • Recognize the unequal impact the pandemic has taken on Latino/a students and their families — foster a sense of “familia” to ensure they are successful both socially and academically on your campus.
  • Analyze and assess current demographic and trend data on enrollment — engage your faculty and staff to utilize this information and next step strategies to develop an environment and support programs that promote Latino/a student success.
  • Implement strategies and best practices from institutions that are finding success with Latino/a student persistence, graduation, and career readiness – take away ideas, models, and programs that you can adapt for your campus needs so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
