Hispanic Heritage Month Gallery exhibit

October 7 @ 7:30 am - 9:00 pm

SUNY Broome Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month! Shaping the future together - Pioneers of Change

The interdisciplinary Hispanic Heritage Month Gallery exhibit opened on 9-24-24, with a welcome from President Hawkins, and with Broome alumni speakers joining on Zoom. Bryan Henriquez, an engineer, spoke from El Salvador. Mariela Peralta, also an engineer, spoke from the Dominican Republic, and Venezuelan Thaylor Aguilera, yet another engineer, spoke from Virginia.

All sang the praises of the people and programs at SUNY Broome, with Mariela especially grateful as well for an International Students Organization trip to Niagara Falls, led by Loreta Paniccia.

The exhibit included posters and PowerPoints of US students in Myriam Stanton’s Spanish class, and in Kathleen McKenna’s Effective Speaking class, which is collaborating with Celaya, Mexico. The finishing touches of the graphic designs were completed by Hall Groat.

Students, such as Axell Camacho Cintron were on hand to talk about their work. Parents and friends attended. The artwork from our personal collections was also on display.

Finally, in a taste test of salsa and hot sauce, the winner, hands down, was Myriam Stanton’s abuelita’s salsa recipe, prepared by Professor Stanton.

The exhibit, themed Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together, will run through October 30, 2024. The first-floor Gallery, room 104, is open whenever the Library is open.
