SUNY Broome, in collaboration with Binghamton University’s Center for Middle East and North Africa Studies and the American Civic Association, is pleased to present Dr. Yacoub Aljaffery who will be giving a roundtable-inspired talk entitled, “From Camp to Campus: Refugee Students, Higher Education, and the Path to Success.” An ESL (English as a Second Language) education professor at Augsburg University, Dr. Aljaffery was also nominated by Minnesota TESOL (Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages) to be an advocate for ESL in Washington, D.C. in July 2024.
A passionate educator, researcher, and speaker dedicated to advocating for refugee students and their success in the education system, Dr. Aljaffery will share his own personal journey as well as highlight the rich cultural and linguistic wealth refugee students bring with them. He will highlight how educators can tap into students’ funds of knowledge to create inclusive, empowering learning environments where all students can thrive.
