Read Middlemarch with us!

Middlemarch has been recognized as a “work of genius” and “a cathedral of words”. It secured Eliot’s place “high in the pantheon of English literature”.

Middlemarch by George Eliot is considered by many experts to be the greatest novel in the English language. George Eliot was the pen name of writer Mary Ann Evans who knew she had to publish under a male name to be taken seriously. Eliot also lived a very controversial life, defying the conventions of women’s literature of the day and turning the “marriage plot” upside down: she rejects the fairy-tale happy endings common in her era and is credited with writing one of the first psychological novels. Literary titan Virginia Woolfe called Middlemarch “one of the few English novels written for grown-up people”.

If you are up for the challenge of reading an outstanding (and long!) classic of the Western canon, come to our meeting.

While supplies last, SUNY Broome students can receive a free copy of the book at this meeting by providing their name and SUNY Broome ID number. Others may still join us by reading the free version of the book at the Gutenberg Project.
