The women’s soccer team ended a remarkable season on Tuesday night by falling to #2 Herkimer after two overtimes and PKs.
Broome and Herkimer played to a 1-1 draw across regulation and two overtime periods, until a relentless Hornets effort came up just short in the penalty kicks round. Herkimer emerged from the penalty shootout with a 2-0 advantage and advanced to the Region 3B Championship.
Wehrum Stadium crackled with energy from the opening whistle as an eight-win Hornets squad played toe-to-toe for 110 minutes with the nationally-ranked Herkimer Generals. After 14 scoreless minutes, the Generals managed to break the deadlock with a short corner kick for a goal by Lydia Reimer at 14:15. The intense pace of play escalated into the second half with Broome continuously countering to keep the Herkimer defenders on their toes. Broome’s persistence paid off in the 81st minute when Courtney Seery leveled the score with a brilliant free kick from 25 yards out. Each team continued to fight for the remainder of regulation, but neither could score the decisive goal following Broome’s strong comeback and overtime was forced. When two 10-minute overtimes did not break the tie, the game moved to the dramatic arena of penalty kicks. Successful PKs by Reimer and Elizabeth Cingranelli were the decisive factors for Herkimer.
Hornets goalkeeper Crista Schanbacher displayed a remarkable showing, amassing 10 crucial saves during regulation and OT with unwavering determination. Broome’s defense held firm despite Herkimer’s relentless shooting, limiting the opponent to only 11 shots on goal out of 27 total attempts.
Broome ends its high-achieving season with a final record of 8-5-1, showcasing talent, excitement, and perseverance along the way. Congratulations to the Hornets for a season that defied the odds and resulted in a Region III Semifinal appearance!
