SUNY Broome women's soccer team traveled to face the Herkimer Generals
The women’s soccer team traveled to face the Herkimer Generals on Saturday and battled to a 5-2 loss.

Thus far on the season, Herkimer has tied or defeated every NJCAA Region III opponent it has faced, it has defeated an NCAA Division III four-year school in SUNY Cobleskill, and its only losses have come to an NCAA Division III four-year school in SUNY Poly and a USCAA Division I four-year school in Bryant & Stratton College- Syracuse. The team is also currently ranked just outside the top-10 in the NJCAA Division III Women’s Soccer rankings, so needless to say, especially at home, the Generals are an awfully tough opponent.

The Hornets however, were not fazed by the profile of Herkimer and battled it out as they did against the Generals in the NJCAA Region III District B Semi-Final last season.

After Herkimer scored first in the 15th minute with a shot from inside the box, Broome responded with a goal in the 26th minute off of a free ball on the outside of the box. The free ball was retrieved by Amber Perry and delivered to Kara Sullivan, who made her way across the top of the box and curled a shot into the upper corner of the net.

The two teams held at 1-1 for the next 10 minutes until Herkimer broke free with a ball down the sideline and delivered a cross into the box for a one-touch finish in the 36th minute. The remainder of the first half stayed evenly-matched and Broome trailed just 2-1 entering the break.

The Generals would score again in the 62nd minute with a strong shot that sailed just out of the reach of goalkeeper Madeline Hyzer. Broome would respond right away, however, as Zephora Brouillette added to her recent scoring frenzy by stealing the ball from a defender and beating the Herkimer keeper for a goal just 14 seconds later.

Herkimer added to its lead with a breakaway goal in the 69th minute and then again in the 78th minute to bring the final score to 5-2. Hyzer made eight saves in goal for Broome.

The Hornets will look to add another win to their resume when they travel to Jamestown CC on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. match.
