Broome got off to a quick start on Saturday and was able to hold off a Herkimer comeback bid en route to a 68-64 win at home against the NJCAA DIII’s 10th ranked team.

The Hornets wasted no time getting out in front of the Generals and kept a sizable lead throughout the first quarter, ending the first up 23-10 behind Avery Kenyon’s 11 points, Terricka Glisson’s 6 points and Ava Eichler’s 6 points. The second quarter saw Herkimer close the gap to ten points and send both teams into the half with Broome holding onto a 37-27 lead thanks in part to Lakeisha Temu and Gwendolyn Payne coming off the bench and hitting some timely three pointers.

Herkimer, currently #3 in the latest Region III Poll, started their comeback early in the third quarter behind the shooting of Kapri Bradshaw and Jenna Faulkner with 6 points each to go into the final frame tied at 49-49. The fourth quarter saw several lead changes before the Hornets were able to go ahead for good late in fourth. Eichler’s 11 points led the way, 4 of those points coming from the charity stripe late in the quarter to ice the game.

Eichler led all scorers with 25 points on 72% shooting from the field and 100% from the free throw line. Kenyon dropped 18 points and added 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists to her totals. Dana Stepp led the way on the boards and steals for Broome with 11 and 6 respectively. Brooke Ladd chipped in with 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block and 2 points. Payne came off the bench to score 9 points including two 3-balls to provide a spark in the second quarter. The Hornets improved to 3-1 overall while the Generals dropped to 6-2.

Broome is off for the Thanksgiving break and will return to the Baldwin Gym Wednesday, December 1st at 6:00 pm for a Region III contest against Mohawk Valley CC.
