Ava Eichler (Oneonta, NY) had a big night in her collegiate debut.

The women’s basketball team opened up the 2021-22 season with a win on Tuesday evening in the Baldwin Gymnasium, defeating Penn State Wilkes-Barre 70-39.

The all freshman team got out to an early lead in the first quarter but the Nittany Lions clawed their way back to within striking range before the Hornets went on a late run to end the first frame 15-10. The second quarter saw Broome extend their lead, despite a couple of key 3-balls from Penn State’s Shelia Carr, and go into the half up 31-22. The second half belonged to the young Hornets, outscoring the Nittany Lions 21-7 in the third and 18-10 in the fourth.

Ava Eichler (Oneonta, NY) had a big night in her collegiate debut, scoring 27 points, grabbing 6 rebounds and adding 4 steals to her totals. Avery Kenyon (Hammond, NY) also put up some big numbers with 22 points, 9 boards and 7 blocks. Dana Stepp (Otego, NY) and Brooke Ladd (Johnson City, NY) chipped in with 7 points apiece. Ladd led the team in rebounding and assists with 14 and 7 respectively to go along with her 3 steals. Stepp added 5 boards, 4 assists and 3 steals to her stat line while anchoring the defense all night long.

Broome will hit the road on Saturday for a 2:00 pm tipoff against Camden County CC in Blackwood, NJ.
