The women’s basketball team fell to North Country CC, currently the nation’s 5th ranked team, in Saranac Lake by a score of 74-64 on Saturday afternoon. The contest saw both teams evenly matched through the first three quarters with the Hornets getting the best of the Saints in the first quarter by two, 19-17. The second quarter was more of the same but this time it was the host team by three, 22-19 to send the both teams into the half with the Saints up 39-38.

Much like the first half the third quarter saw both teams trading baskets and stops with neither team able to get separation and ended the frame tied 14-14 and a 53-52 Saints lead. The fourth started out the same except for a three to four minute stretch midway through when some costly turnovers by the Hornets and the dominating play of sophomore Lavender Ward finally created the separation needed to win the game.

Avery Kenyon led Broome in scoring with 24 points and blocks with 4. Ava Eichler picked up her first double-double of the year scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 boards to go with her 3 steals. Terricka Glisson and Brooke Ladd scored 7 points each as well as grabbing 5 and 7 rebounds respectively. Ladd also contributed 5 assists in the game. Dana Stepp turned in a solid performance with 5 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and two steals.

North Country, the NJCAA’s 5th ranked and Region III’s top ranked team, improved to 4-0 while Broome, Region III’s 5th ranked team, fell to 2-1. Up next is another Region III contest against a ranked team, the Region’s #3 Herkimer College (5-0), next Saturday in the Baldwin Gym starting at 1:00 pm.
