Wellness Wednesday out of the Counseling Corner:

What is wellness?

Well·ness /ˈwelnəs/ noun

  • the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.
“measures of a patient’s progress toward wellness”

Each Wednesday – out of the Counseling Corner, we will provide you with some wellness information, tips and activities. We are of the mindset that maintaining a certain standard of wellness in our lives helps us to function optimally. By functioning optimally we hope that you will be able to achieve both personal and academic success.

Wellness is a key part of maintaining balance with school, work, life, family and other obligations that you may have. Take a moment to do this activity. Keep this activity available throughout the semester to check in with when you are feeling out of balance.

Take a piece of paper and a pen and sit somewhere quiet for a while. Play some music or just get in a place in your body and mind where you can think and reflect for 5 minutes.

  • Start off by taking a few deep breaths.
  • Now let’s write a wellness plan for you.
    • To start off, write what “wellness” means to you.
    • After writing this – then describe, in writing, what you would look like, feel like, be like – if you achieved optimal wellness.
    • What would be going on in your life? What would you feel like?
    • Make this attainable.
  • After describing what your life would be like if you were living it fully- let’s make a plan to help make this achievable.
    • Who are your core supporters?
    • Who are your life supports you – the people you can go to at 2 am for anything? List these people. These will then become your go-to folks throughout the semester when you need to express yourself,
    • What refreshes you?
    • What do you like to do to de-stress and to feel good? Write this down- list as many things that you can and do like to do. This will be your go-to list of things to do when the stress is getting too high. When the eating habits are making you feel sluggish. When the activity level is non-existent.
  • Now lets see what is getting in the way of you living your best life.
    • What is getting in the way?
    • What could you change up a bit so that you can live a more balanced life?
    • List a few things – do not go overboard here- 1-3 items that are really bringing you down and getting i n your way of living well. This could be – I do not budget my time well, or I do not get enough sleep.
  • Once you have identified a few things – let’s make a plan to remedy these items.
    • So, if it is – “i do not get enough sleep”…. Well.. .fix it!
    • I know- it is not always that easy. But, having a short list of some barriers is helpful- once we are aware of what is getting in our way – we can make a more conscientious effort to “fix” these things.

So there ya have it- a brief wellness plan- your definition of wellness, what wellness looks like and feels like for you. What you like to do – your supports and what is getting in the way. Writing this all down and looking back at it over the next 15 weeks can help you reflect on what is going well, what resources you really do have in your life and what may still be getting in the way of you living your best life.
