After Broome held a 2-1 advantage through the first three sets of the contest, Onondaga roared back to push the match to a fifth set, eventually earning the road victory in the Hornets’ West Gymnasium. The Lazers’ win came by set scores of 23-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-18, and 15-9. The Hornets drop to 1-2 with the loss, having went to a winner-take-all fifth set in all three matches they’ve played thus far.

Onondaga held a 9-7 advantage early in the first stanza before Broome was able to tie the set up at 13-13. From there, the Hornets went on a 7-0 run to take a 20-13 lead. With Broome up 24-18 and needing just one more point to close it out, the Lazers put together a 5-0 run to pull within one, 24-23. Broome would earn the next point, however, to achieve the 25-23 W in the first set.

The Hornets held an 8-5 lead early in the second set but then Onondaga had a 4-0 run and took a 9-8 lead. After Broome tied the set at 9-9 and then went up 10-9, another Lazers run made the contest 14-10 in favor of Onondaga. Broome later used a 4-0 run of its own to go from down 15-12 to ahead 16-15. In the closing points of set two, the score was again knotted, this time at 19-19, before Onondaga scored the final six points of the set to earn a 25-19 W.

Onondaga had early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the third set, but the Hornets quickly tied the set and then took the lead and did not look back, eventually earning a 25-16 win in the third set. Onondaga did not go away though in the fourth set, opening up with a 4-0 advantage. Broome went on two 4-0 runs throughout the stanza, but the Lazers used a 3-0 run and a 4-0 run of their own en route to a 25-18 win, forcing a fifth set.

Onondaga would not trail in the decisive fifth set, starting out with a 4-0 lead and eventually winning the set 15-9.

Kate Spencer had a team-high 10 kills in the match, also tallying 23 digs, while Amariah Argro added nine kills, 25 assists, and 28 digs. Ayshah Almashni recorded 46 digs. Lejla Cehic played a great all-around match, recording five kills, four solo blocks, one assisted block, and a dig.

The Hornets will now turn their attention to the POD they’re hosting this Saturday. Broome will square off against a couple of Region III opponents in Herkimer College and Mohawk Valley CC at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
