SUNY Broome women fell, 3-2, to Jefferson CC in five hard-fought sets.

Broome came up short on Wednesday night in the West Gym and fell, 3-2, to Jefferson CC in five hard-fought sets.

The Hornets came out on fire and took the first set from the Cannoneers 25-11 before dropping the next two sets 25-20 and 25-20 and then taking the fourth 25-23. Jefferson came out on top in the deciding set 15-8. In their previous two meetings back on September 3rd and September 10th, the Hornets were swept by the Cannoneers 3-0.

The Hornets came out fast and took the first set on the strength of Casie Kephart’s early serving run which included 3 aces. Brianna Rossi would not let the ball hit the floor and racked up 12 digs in the opening set. Setter, Anna Tiberia spread the offense evenly with Josephine Dure, Megan Carden and Kephart recording 2 kills apiece.

In the second set the Cannoneers were able to bounce back and win 25-20 despite the Hornets having 13 Kills, 27 digs and 5 total blocks in the set. The third set was also in favor of the visitors by the identical 25-20 score.

The fourth set saw the Hornets go up early but the Cannoneers rallied late in the set and pulled ahead 23-22. After a timeout by the Hornets, Gabriella Bishop recorded back to back kills to get the Hornets to a 24-23 advantage followed by a Cannoneers hit out of bounds and a 25-23 win for the host team.

In the deciding set it was all Jefferson, taking control early and holding on to win 15-8.

Melissa Carden recorded a season high 6 solo blocks and 1 assisted block, Megan Carden posted a double-double with 15 kills and 24 digs, Dure chipped in with 3 solo blocks and 5 assisted blocks, Tiberia added a double-double with 34 assists and 23 digs, Rossi had 37 digs and Kephart had a team high 5 aces.

Broome will travel on Saturday for a POD hosted by Corning CC beginning at 10:00 am and face off with Tompkins Cortland CC, SUNY Adirondack CC and Hudson Valley CC.
