Scam Alert

Dear Campus Community:

The Human Resources Department is reaching out to educate our employees as there appears to be a new round of fraudulent/hacking and identity theft activity that is generating false unemployment insurance claim notices sent by the NYS Department of Labor to many employees, not only throughout NYS but nationwide. In recent weeks at SUNY Broome, we have seen an uptick in our employees receiving these fraudulent notices as well.

We don’t wish to be alarming but seek for employees to possess the tools necessary, if needed. These phony scams utilize personal information, including social security number,

Driver’s License or Motor Vehicle ID card number and current/previous/alternate mailing addresses, from those that may still be employed or recently employed. Although thousands of Americans are being affected, most won’t learn they are affected until they receive an Unemployment Notice from their State or notification from their employer.

If you are a SUNY Broome employee who receives a notice from the New York State Department of Labor (DOL) related to an application for unemployment benefits that you did not file, and suspect you are a victim of unemployment insurance fraud and identity theft, please take the following steps:

  • Contact Paige Sedlacek, in the Human Resources office at: sedlacekpm@sunybroome.edu.
Paige will respond by sending you an e-mail outlining next steps.
  • The NYS Department of Labor has set up a link with valuable information to follow and to report this fraud at: Department of Labor Report Fraud.

Keep in mind, if the fraudulent claim uses a previous address or an alternate address, you many not receive a notice. If a notice is received in Human Resources, we will contact you via e-mail instructing you of steps to take.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
