Senator Lea Webb (LA ’01) and Trustee Cornell Morris

SUNY Broome proudly announces that our own Trustee Cornell Morris was awarded a Liberty Medal for his exemplary life of service to his country, community, and veterans. Presented by Senator Lea Webb (LA ’01) on July 28, the Liberty Medal is the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate.

In his 25 years with the U.S. Army, the retired Lieutenant Colonel was a revered Military Intelligence Officer. His career spanned some of the most complex and consequential operations of the modern era, serving in key leadership roles during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and the Global War on Terror. He also served domestically with Task Force Katrina and Rita, aiding communities devastated by natural disasters.

In his second career as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Morris has continued to devote his professional life to supporting military members, veterans, and their families. As Director of the Binghamton Veterans Center, he provides mentoring, training, and leadership while delivering evidence-based psychotherapy and addiction counseling to those navigating the invisible wounds of service.

Morris was appointed to the College’s Board of Trustees in spring 2025, and hit the ground running as an involved and engaged steward of SUNY Broome.

“Trustee Morris generously gives his time and expertise to ensuring SUNY Broome students — especially student veterans — have access to the high-quality opportunities, training and education they deserve,” President Tony D. Hawkins said. “He is a fixture at campus events, going well above and beyond his trustee duties with the same steadfast commitment that he’s shown to his country and community. We could not be prouder of this well-deserved commendation.”
