Melissa Carden hit the 33’3″ mark in the triple jump

Both the men and women Track & Field teams traveled to Geneseo on Saturday to compete in the SUNY Geneseo Early Season Invitational.

The addition of Track & Field marked the beginning of a new era for SUNY Broome Athletics, giving student-athletes another option to participate in sports. Broome currently offers baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, eSports, cross country and now track & field.

The Hornets saw three women hit qualifying marks for Nationals, Melissa Carden hit the 33’3″ mark in the triple jump, Megan Carden came in at 16’6″ in the long jump, and 4’11” in the high jump and Claudia Chermak posted a time of 21:18.53 in the 5,000 meter run. Jakob Getchell came close to a qualifying time in the 800, running a 2:06.16 just shy of the 2:04.52 qualifying time.

Other highlights on the women’s side were Melissa Carden posting a 13.97 in the 100 meter dash good enough for a 29th place finish and in the 400 meter hurdles she came in 14th with a time of 1:13.69. Megan Carden came in at the 22nd spot with a time of 17.97 in the 100 meter hurdles.

On the men’s side Stephen Bauer and Damien Terrell came in 47th and 48th respectively in the 100 meter dash with times of 12.66 and 12.95. Bauer also posted a time of 26.01 in the 200 meter dash for a 44th place finish and in the 400 meter dash Sultan Oklla came in 47th with a time of 1:01.47. Eric DeHart led Broome runners in the 5,000 meter run coming in at the 36th spot with a time of 17:35.38 and Robert Romeo came in 20th in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 21.95. Austin Tompkins finished 7th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 14:02.98.
