In Kyoto
by Bashō
Translated by Robert Hass
Even in Kyoto—
hearing the cuckoo’s cry—
I long for Kyoto.
Bashō (1644-1694) is primarily known for his mastery of haiku and his poetic travelogue, The Narrow Road to Oku. “In Kyoto” is a well-known poem about the complexities of desire.
