SUNY Broome to Make the Switch to Green Search Engine Ecosia
- This summer, Ecosia, the world’s largest not-for-profit search engine, will become the default across campus to support the university’s sustainability strategy and help plant tens of thousands of trees
- Ecosia puts 100% of its profits towards climate action – so far, over 230 million trees have been planted in biodiversity hotspots around the world
- 40 universities globally have already switched to Ecosia, and SUNY Broome will be next!
6 May, 2025: This fall semester, students at SUNY Broome will be able to plant trees by making searches with Ecosia–the new default search engine on campus. This move will lead to the planting of thousands of trees globally over the course of the academic year.
Like most search engines, Ecosia makes money from ad clicks. The Berlin-based tech company is a not-for-profit business that dedicates 100% of its profits to climate action. Ecosia has planted over 230 million trees worldwide, primarily in biodiversity hotspots including Brazil, Indonesia and Madagascar. It also invests in environmental and social initiatives, such as purchasing solar power plants to ensure that all Ecosia searches are powered twice over by renewable energy.
Student advocates from the SUNY Broome Ecology Club spend the past year promoting Ecosia among the student body and worked with IT on the details behind making Ecosia the campus search engine by default. As the generation that will be most affected by the climate crisis, Ecosia is a simple way for students to be climate-active every day.
Lauren White, President of the Ecology Club said: “With climate change at the forefront of so many minds, we are delighted to make this important change on campus. With Ecosia as the default search engine, thousands of trees will be planted as a result, helping local communities, sequestering carbon, and supporting biodiversity. This will have an impact well beyond our campus.”
Fred Henderson, strategic user success manager at Ecosia, said: “Universities are some of the most forward-thinking institutions in the world and their student bodies are full of vibrant, creative young people who are determined to make a positive impact on the world. We’ve been delighted to support over 30 universities to set us as their default and look forward to planting more trees thanks to students searching with us around the world.”
