One can at a time, SUNY Broome students formed a massive edifice that showed off their engineering talents — all while donating nearly two tons of food to people in need.
For the first time, SUNY Broome students participated in Canstruction at the Oakdale Mall, in which organizations, schools and businesses construct massive structures out of non-perishable food items, which are then donated to the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse and the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. Entries to the contest included a revolving globe from BAE Systems, as well as April the Giraffe and her baby, the house featured in the movie Up and more.
SUNY Broome’s edifice —
designed and built by first-year students in instructor Susan Schwing’s Engineering Design I and II classes — featured an image of Stinger with flashing red eyes. Panels also displayed the college’s logo in a zigzag design that shows “SUNY” or “Broome” depending on where the viewer stands.
The project is sponsored by a $4,000 donation from the CSRA Company, based in Menands, NY. . All the canned goods used in the project — more than 3,200 total — will be donated to the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse and the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
Make sure you stop by the Oakdale Mall to visit! The structures will be on display for a week, before being disassembled on April 15. Additionally, the public will be able to vote for their favorite Canstruction on the Food Bank’s website, www.foodbankst.org.
