SUNY Broome faculty, Dr. Kennie Leet and Prof. Jason Smith were in Iceland with two independent study students when the Fagradalsfjall volcano began erupting after an 8 month hiatus. A fissure opened up in the Meradalir valley to the northeast of last year’s eruption.

The group made the 4+ hour trek to the eruption under the guidance of the Icelandic Search and Rescue authorities to safely view the eruption. This was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for these students and made possible with generous support from the Broome Community College Foundation. SUNY Broome plans to host a faculty led travel program in Iceland in Summer 2023.
