Binghamton, New York – SUNY Broome Community College proudly celebrated the graduation of its first class of 21 students from the Lineworker Training Program on Oct. 3, 2024. Launched in partnership with New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), this training program addresses critical workforce needs in the energy and utility sectors. To date, 43% of graduates have already started employment in related fields, underscoring the program’s immediate impact on regional workforce development.
The event included a graduation ceremony followed by a dedicated job fair, connecting graduates directly with industry employers. Five prominent companies — NYSEG, Empire Access, Cable Services Company, National Cable, and Triple E Power — attended the job fair, recruiting program graduates for a variety of roles. This unique opportunity allowed graduates to explore immediate job openings, network with potential employers, and gain further insights into the industry.
“The successful graduation of our inaugural class of lineworkers is the perfect example of a successful collaboration when a community college joins forces with an established corporation like NYSEG. Together, we are meeting the needs of our region’s workforce and training future employees for high-paying, in-demand jobs,” Dr. Tony D. Hawkins, President of SUNY Broome, said. “I applaud Danielle Britton and SUNY Broome’s Office of Workforce Development for pioneering this innovative program, and most importantly, I am proud of our new graduates, and look forward to seeing them take their careers to new heights.”
Since its launch, the Lineworker Training Program has blended classroom instruction with hands-on training at NYSEG’s training yard, equipping students with vital skills in electrical line installation, pole climbing, equipment handling, and safety protocols. Graduates also earned certifications in First Aid, CPR, OSHA 10, and operations for Digger Derrick and Insulating Aerial Devices, ensuring they enter the field well-prepared. The retired lineworkers who serve as program instructors and mentors bring unparalleled dedication and expertise to the classroom, guiding students through hands-on experiences essential for success in this demanding field.
Support from IBEW Local 10, Buckingham Manufacturing, Lineman Supply, and Greek Peak has further strengthened the program, providing students with access to high-quality equipment, safety gear, and unique training resources. Additionally, funding from New Energy New York—a grant project led by Binghamton University to advance energy storage systems—has helped enhance the program, positioning SUNY Broome as a leader in preparing skilled workers for the evolving energy industry.
Looking ahead, the College will expand career exploration activities to reach middle and high school students, building a pipeline into utility careers that begins well before graduation. The recent graduation marks a significant step in strengthening the local talent pool and creating long-term career pathways for Southern Tier residents.
