SUNY Broome : Public Safety

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is once again affecting air quality across our region. We encourage all members of the SUNY Broome community to take precautions to protect their health and to review the following information related to the current New York State air quality health advisory.

On Thursday, July 16, the air quality index (AQI) for our campus is currently red (or above 150) meaning the air is unhealthy for everyone. We urge everyone, especially those in sensitive groups, to monitor their local AQI and take precautions as needed.

All individuals should limit time outdoors, and move physical outdoor indoors or rescheduling them. People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens should be especially cautious to limit their time outside, and stay in cool, air-conditioned places as much as possible.

Your health and safety are always our top priorities. Anyone experiencing health concerns such as shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, coughing or headaches is encouraged to promptly seek medical attention.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation maintains an Air Quality Index website with latest conditions, precautions and other helpful information.
