Ayhan Hulagu of the US Karagoz Theater Company will be at SUNY Broome to present a workshop on traditional karagoz shadow puppet theater

Ayhan Hulagu of the US Karagoz Theater Company will be at SUNY Broome to present a workshop on traditional karagoz shadow puppet theater. The workshop is open to students from SUNY Broome, Binghamton University, and members of the community.

Karagoz Shadow Puppet Theater is a traditional performance artform. Ayhan Hulagu has been featured by the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage Magazine. Read more about his work at Kurdish Immigrant Karagoz Puppetry.

The student workshop will last two hours; light refreshments will be available starting at noon.

During the workshop, participants will:

1) Learn about the history of Anatolian shadow theater and demonstrate how it is performed;
2) Learn about making puppets, following traditional methods established over 700 hundred years ago;
3) Explore a classic shadow play text and learn the traditional sounds of characters;
4) Experience and learn how to participate in shadow theater.

No theater, performance, or art experience is needed, but participants should be willing to bring their enthusiasm and sense of adventure to the event.

Space is limited. The event is by registration only. Please contact Lynda Carroll at carrollla1@sunybroome.edu for details, and to register.
