Strive for 85Teaching Resource Center/Professional Development Digital Content Accessibility Campaign

What is “Strive for 85”?

“Strive for 85” means to work toward achieving a Blackboard Ally score of 85% overall for a course. This is a branded campaign designed to increase the awareness of the requirement to provide accessible learning environments and to provide direct support to faculty and staff in their design.

What is the goal of the “Strive for 85” challenge?

The goal of the campaign is to encourage anyone with digital content hosted in the Learning Management System to work toward creating equitable and accessible digital learning environments. Simply, our goal is to help them take a series of smaller steps that make a big difference in the student and end user experience.

How will faculty and staff meet the goal of the Strive for 85 challenge?

The Teaching Resource Center and Professional Development at SUNY Broome have developed and are preparing to market and host professional development workshops and webinars in support of the challenge. We will also leverage stackable certificates using third party platforms throughout the semester and academic year to help faculty and staff increase their skills in not only creating and revising documents that are housed within the learning management system, but are also designed to support the various needs of end users through thoughtful awareness and contemplation of practices that may yield inequitable participation and outcomes as a consequence of their design.

What are the deliverables that must be completed for the “Strive for 85” challenge?

In order to complete the challenge, you must:

  • Identify your baseline Blackboard Ally score
  • Attend at least two workshops with a Strive for 85 designation
  • Complete the Deque University Digital Content Accessibility Guru certificate (3 levels)
  • Attend and complete at least one accessibility webinar through the Innovative Educators platform
  • Raise your Ally score by at least fifteen percentage points or to an overall score of 85, whichever is met first!

What do faculty and staff get?

  • Improved accessibility for all students, which means less work to address individual accessibility issues over time
  • Strive for 85 T shirt (upon completion of the challenge)
  • Bragging rights for the department/area with the largest improvement in overall Blackboard Ally scores (we will prominently display your group photo in your T-shirts on the walls of the TRC, the highest of honors!)
