Regular feedback can help students stay on track or make adjustments as needed.  Academic Coaches continue to monitor alerts and can provide additional assistance and connections to support as appropriate.

The Starfish Core and Outreach Teams have developed a NEW flag specifically for our current circumstances. It is called “Student Needs Help with New Course Format.”  Raise this when a student needs assistance adapting to the shift in online course delivery. Students will receive an email from Starfish including any comments if you share them. The email includes directions to resources and tutorials. Students will also receive outreach from an Academic Coach to support getting acclimated. 

Students who are successfully navigating all these changes could benefit from your positive feedback as well! Don’t forget our Kudos options for students.  All your favorite alerts (flags/ kudos/referrals) are still available. Here’s a quick guide to using Starfish for Raising Flags and Kudos.

System Flags for BlackBoard Logins

The Starfish System is integrated with BlackBoard and can detect if a student has logged into a course.  The “BlackBoard Non-activity” flag is available now through May 19, 2020 to alert students if they have not logged into the course for five (5) days. Students will receive an email reminding them of the importance of staying current in their courses.  If the student logs into the course, the flag will clear automatically. If you wish to participate in this Starfish system-generated alert, kindly complete this form.

Starfish can help you quickly email your students individually, all from one course, or all students for the active term. Check out this guide for details.

Appointment Scheduling

Allow students to schedule a meeting with you quickly and easily via Starfish. You set your availability and students can select the day/time that works best for them. You both get email confirmations which helps reduce no-shows. Review this quick guide for instructions on getting started. This short video is also helpful in setting up your availability. Tell students to find you in their Success Network and choose “Schedule” to display your availability and follow the menu prompts to make their appointment.

If you choose to offer web conferencing for student meetings, you will still need to send the student connection details. Please visit this Faculty Resources website for details on using BlackBoard Collaborate, Google Hangouts Meet, or Zoom.
