Karissa Camp on the field for SUNY Broome Softball

The softball team hosted a doubleheader against Herkimer College in its season opener on Tuesday and dropped both games.

The Hornets fell 15-2 over five innings in game 1 and lost 15-7 in seven innings in game 2.

Hannah Aton shined for the Hornets on the offensive end in game 1 by going 2-2 with an RBI double, a walk, and a run scored. Defensively, she also tied for the team-high in putouts, and added two assists. Makaeyla Ailport had an ESPN-worthy diving catch in center field. Brianna Hanley and Mackenzie Collins toed the rubber for Broome in game 1.

Ailport drew two walks, stole two bases, and scored 2 runs in game 2. Hanley went 1-1 at the plate with an RBI double and a HBP. Collins was 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI in game 2. Alana Espinoza pitched 6.1 innings for the Hornets in game 2, only allowing two earned runs and striking out six. At the plate, she was 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Claire Durant flashed the leather defensively with a diving catch in center field.

Broome sits at 0-2 on the season and will return to play at home on Monday and Tuesday of next week with doubleheaders vs Mohawk Valley and Hudson Valley.
