The women’s soccer team defeated Herkimer College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 6-1 in a Region III matchup played on Alumni Field.

The spirited contest started out as expected with both teams going back and forth and playing an up-tempo game. The Hornets started strong maintaining possession for the first several minutes, but it was the Generals striking first when Herkimer’s Elizabeth Cingrath received a through ball and got on a breakaway where she beat Broome’s keeper Carly Hein to take a 1-0 lead. Arianna Michitti received a double assist from Ella Stafford and Avery Kenyon in the 25th minute and promptly deposited the ball via a rocket into the back of the net. The winning goal came at 30:56 of the first half when Stafford got her own goal off of another double assist by Dana Stepp and Quinn Miller that opened her up for the finish and a 2-1 halftime lead.

The second started with the Hornets focused on the task at hand when just 1:53 into the half, Stafford and Miller teamed up to play a ball across the box from the endline that Dana Stepp sent into the back of the net. Miller added a brace of her own when, at 62:27 she found a clear spot in front of the net where Mariella Michitti found her with a short cross that she buried. Fourteen minutes later Miller was the recipient of another great cross from Stafford and scored from close range. The final goal came at 88:59 when Arianna Michitti completed her brace by beating two defenders on top of the box and placing the ball behind the Generals keeper.

Broome improved to 6-1-1 overall while Herkimer fell to 5-2-0.
