Several early passes of paint are applied with a palette knife over a transparent red oxide layer or imprimatura. The process follows the idea of painting to terminus and revealing aspects of the early layers like the hair and some of the lower key values. The early paint stages are applied heavy and thick and then finished with scumbles and glazes floated over and into the heavier paint application!
