Oil study, Apples created by Professor Zeggert

A recent oil study, Apples created by Professor Zeggert has been accepted for inclusion in the 86th Annual National Exhibition of the Cooperstown Art Association. This year 383 entries were submitted, and the Juror of Selection, Mary E. Murray, had a difficult task in choosing 149 works to create a diverse and exciting exhibit.

The study is the result of transitioning to the Cox palette, over an open grisaille with glazes of CMY. The application of the Cox palette is considered an ebauche or dead layer that proceeds several passes of the higher chroma Cyan, Magenta and Yellow colors.

Professor Zeggert explained, that the apples were painted from life and continued to deteriorate throughout the process of making the painting. ‘The idea of the impact of “time” provides challenges of physical change that I tried to illustrate as part of and that make up the finished piece.’ Zeggert teaches painting, drawing and illustration as a member of the Art and Design dept.
