Professional Development Weekly Digest

Fall 2021

Week 3!

What’s new this week? SO MUCH! This week’s digests start with some opportunities from our external partners at The Chronicle of Higher Education and finishes with an interesting article regarding the “lost” sophomore class, many of whom were high school seniors in the pandemic and came to our institutions during the height of restrictions. We also have some campus based events for you to plan for, as well. Need something? Have an idea? Know of a cool article or event? Let me know at malmbergsm@sunybroome.edu or you can email Professional Development at professionaldevelopment@sunybroome.edu!

Digital Skills and Gen Z

Digital skills for digital natives? You read that right. This free Chronicle of Higher Education webinar aims to cover how institutions can ensure that Gen Z’s digital natives will continue to evolve their technology skills for the future, how we can make sure digital skills are distributed equitably when many of our students face barriers to accessing technology, and how can humanities programs can develop such lessons into their traditional approaches.

Student Engagement for Academic Success:

Enhancing the Student Experience

After more than a year spent largely in virtual classrooms, learning remotely from home, students crave campus life and the rich academic experience that goes with it. What does that look like now? And what lessons have colleges learned about creating an effective learning experience in such an uncertain environment? This free webinar from The Chronicle of Higher Education will cover Effective in-person, online, and hybrid approaches to learning, the importance of student engagement for academic success, and trends in ed-tech innovation and access.

The Lost Sophomore Class?

This Boston Globe article about the “lost” sophomore class really illustrated a phenomenon that was brought to my immediate attention while having a conversation with a friend and her daughter, one of our students. In the conversation, the student talked at length about the letdown that was her high school senior experience as a result of Covid, and how her first college going experience was “anticlimactic” since she was in her bedroom for most of it. I imagine she is not alone, and that we have a second year/sophomore class on our campus who have very similar needs as our freshmen cohort. What might you be noticing among our students? Are our second year/sophomores needing as much guidance and support as our freshmen? Are there opportunities for us to “re-welcome” our second year students and how might we accomplish this?

Just what is Hyflex? In a nutshell it’s student choice – come to class in-person, join in remotely, or participate asynchronously. For the instructor, this can mean augmenting the way learning takes place. This lunchshop presentation will focus on the key elements of Hyflex and an opportunity to ask questions about how it will work for particular types of courses.
