In honor of Women’s History Month, the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Broome County recognizes two women that have supported our community.

Frances Libous, the wife of the late Senator Tom Libous, was very supportive of her husband who brought to the attention of the nation the needs of Broome County and particularly SUNY Broome.  She was the force that stood beside him.

Camille Jones, Program Coordinator for the Broome County Martin Luther King Commission, would not accept “no” from corporations and industries with regard to financial support of the cause.  These two great women were honored with plaques at the recent Martin Luther King celebration and were very instrumental in helping to make the dream of having a statue of Dr. King here in our community a reality to serve as a reminder that we have to take that dream of Dr. King of equality and make it a goal!

“Dr. King stated ‘a goal is just a dream with a deadline,’” said Claudia Clarke, director of EOP at SUNY Broom, and Vice President of the Martin Luther King Commission. “These dynamics encourage all of us to be the ‘light’ in the darkness of inequality and discrimination.”
