SUNY Broome

October 11, 2023

Dear SUNY Broome Community,

I write to you with a heavy heart due to the horrific violence that has recently taken place in Israel and Gaza. My deepest condolences are with those who are impacted by or mourning loved ones lost in this devastating and catastrophic war.

Broome County is a beautifully diverse community and is called home by many individuals with cultural ties to Israel, Palestine and the Middle East region, which is culturally, religiously and politically complex. Please be aware that many of our colleagues and classmates may be negatively impacted by these events.

SUNY Broome is committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive learning environment, and stands ready with resources to assist anyone who may be struggling or in need of support. It is also a concern that events like this could facilitate other acts of hatred from those who hold Antisemitic and Islamophobic beliefs. Be reminded that violence or discrimination have no home here at SUNY Broome. Anyone who overhears, or is the target of, any type of hate speech should immediately report it to a faculty, staff member, or administrator.

One of my focuses as President will be to instill a deep sense of belonging for our students and our employees. Each and every Hornet should feel comfortable and welcome as their authentic self, regardless of personal beliefs or heritage. I deeply appreciate your support and solidarity in this important, continued effort.

Sincerely,

Tony D. Hawkins, PhD
President, SUNY Broome Community College
