
The men’s basketball team held a 45-31 lead at halftime but was outscored by 21 in the second half of a 92-85 loss on the road at Tompkins Cortland CC on Sunday.
The Hornets suffered the loss despite the fact that six players scored in double digits and the bench unit scored 45 points.
SUNY Broome jumped out to an early 11-4 advantage before Tompkins Cortland tied the contest, and then jumped ahead 19-11. SUNY Broome answered to go back up 26-25 at the 6:03 mark in the first half. From there the Hornets raced to a 10-point lead with just two minutes left in the half.
Two free throws to begin the second half briefly extended the Hornets’ lead to 16 points, but the Panthers went on a 12-0 run to cut the lead to four with 16 minutes to play. SUNY Broome fended off Tompkins Cortland until the score became tied at 51-51 with 11:37 remaining, and the Hornets trailed the rest of the way from there.
Tyrell Davender scored a team-high 16 points off the bench, adding two rebounds and three assists. Dejon Williams went for 14 points and 11 rebounds. Wyeth Lamont had 12 points off the bench, while Isaiah Sanders had 11. Ponce Williams also scored 11 points, adding three rebounds and five assists. Xavier Thomas-Davis returned from a two-game absence due to injury and had 10 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.
The Hornets shot 44.8% from the field and did not miss a free throw (18-18), but were just 7-28 (25%) from three-point range.
SUNY Broome falls to 3-7 on the season but sits at 2-1 in MSAC play. The Hornets will host another MSAC opponent in Finger Lakes CC on Thursday.
