The men’s basketball team came from behind to pull off a thrilling 61-58 win at conference opponent Cayuga CC on Wednesday, November 5.

The Hornets were fueled by double-digit performances from Ponce Williams, Dejon Williams, and Christopher Zielewicz. P. Williams led SUNY Broome in scoring with 15 points, adding four assists and two rebounds. D. Williams filled the box score with 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Zielewicz came off the Hornets’ bench to provide 11 points and five rebounds. Additionally, Joshua Bernard scored six points and pulled down nine rebounds.

The Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) matchup was tight throughout, as Cayuga held a two-point lead at halftime. The Spartans continued to hold a single-digit lead for the majority of the second half, but SUNY Broome stuck around, repeatedly inching closer.

The Spartans went up by seven with just under seven minutes left. An ensuing SUNY Broome run saw the Hornets jump in front with just under five minutes remaining. There were several lead changes in the final minutes, culminating with SUNY Broome taking a 59-58 lead with less than a minute left. Two clutch free throws then put the Hornets up by three. The Spartans could not tie the game on two three-point looks in the final five seconds.

The SUNY Broome defensive effort was the differentiator in the contest. The Hornets forced the Spartans into shooting just 17-70 (24.3%) from the field and committing 22 turnovers. Nine different Hornets logged at least one steal, as the team combined for 12 overall.

SUNY Broome moved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win.
