March 21 Guest Speaker: What Persistence Looks Like by Dr. G.E.N. Canough

Women’s History Month: Connect Empower Act – Celebrating Local Women

To celebrate Women’s History Month, the SUNY Broome Women’s Institute, in conjunction with the President’s Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion, is hosting a series of events to highlight local women, their careers, choices and contributions to our community. This week, we are celebrating the accomplishments of Dr. G.E.N. Canough, CEO/Founder of ETM Solar Works, Inc.

Dr. Canough is an active leader in local and global community. She has ventured to Haiti many times as part of our SUNY Broome Health for Haiti program. Join us for her talk: What Persistence Looks Like, on from 11 to 11:50 a.m. March 21 in Titchener 101.

When a boy tells me girls can’t do gainers off the high dive and it takes me just two tries to do it. When I decide, in 8th grade, that I want to be a nuclear physicist and everyone, from parents to teachers to friends, tells me that is not something girls can do. I snipe back — the first one was a woman— Marie Curie. And I got my Ph.D. in particle physics in 1987. When people look at me like I have two heads when I decide to start a solar energy business in Binghamton — This is our 31st year in business. Mark my words, ladies, the key to all of this is not genius. It is persistence.
