Women’s History Month: Connect Empower Act – Celebrating Local Women
To celebrate Women’s History Month, the SUNY Broome Women’s Institute, in conjunction with the President’s Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion, is hosting a series of events to highlight local women, their careers, choices and contributions to our community. This week, we are celebrating the accomplishments of Dr. G.E.N. Canough, CEO/Founder of ETM Solar Works, Inc.

When a boy tells me girls can’t do gainers off the high dive and it takes me just two tries to do it. When I decide, in 8th grade, that I want to be a nuclear physicist and everyone, from parents to teachers to friends, tells me that is not something girls can do. I snipe back — the first one was a woman— Marie Curie. And I got my Ph.D. in particle physics in 1987. When people look at me like I have two heads when I decide to start a solar energy business in Binghamton — This is our 31st year in business. Mark my words, ladies, the key to all of this is not genius. It is persistence.
